Freshmen Lead Bulldogs In Round Two Of UCF Challenge
February 05, 2018 | Women's Golf
ORLANDO, Fla. – Coach Ginger Brown-Lemm and the Mississippi State women's golf team have had to rely on youngsters all season, and Monday was no different, as freshman Blair Stockett and Aubree Jones led MSU in the second round of the UCF Challenge to a 7-over 295.
The Bulldogs trimmed seven shots from their 302 tally on Sunday, to end the day in 10th.
"We saw glimpses of greatness today," Brown-Lemm said. "Each of the girls showed their resilience, and we cut half of our shots off from yesterday. Tomorrow is another great opportunity for this squad to build on their confidence and shoot a great final round."
Brown-Lemm's young squad came out strong Monday morning, highlighted with a career first eagle on the second hole of the day from freshman Aubree Jones.
Jones improved 37 spots in the standings from Sunday's first round, ending the day in 25th after shooting 1-under 71 Monday.
"It was really good to come back strong after a tough day yesterday," Jones said. "I made the eagle on my second hole of the day, so that really got me off to a quick start. I hope to finish strong tomorrow."
Freshman Blair Stockett didn't quite have the round she had Sunday, but she still sits among the Top 10 after firing a 3-over 75 Monday and a team high four birdies. The rising star heads into Tuesday's final round at Eagle Creek Golf Club, tied for 10th.
Kendall Wisenbaker also saw improvement in the second round, shaving three strokes from her first-round tally. She collected two birdies en route to a 2-over 74.
Athena Yang and Ela Grimwood notched a 75 and 78 respectively. Playing as an individual, Clara Moyano also carded a 78 Monday.
MSU looks to finish their first spring tournament strong on Tuesday for the final round. Shotgun tee times are set to go off at 8 a.m.
