Women’s Golf Opens Spring With Eighth-Place Finish

ORLANDO, Fla. – A trio of Bulldogs finished in the Top 25 as the Mississippi State women's golf team opened the spring season with an eighth-place finish at the UCF Challenge in Orlando, Fla.
Coach Ginger Brown-Lemm's squad saw improvement in each of the three rounds, saving the best round for last. MSU fired an even-par 288 Tuesday, one-shot shy of matching its lowest round of the season, en route to finishing in eighth place with a 21-over 885.
"This was a glimpse of the good golf to come from this young squad," Brown-Lemm said. "With one junior, two sophomores and two freshmen leading the group, we have a bright future. We scored better every day, managed better every day and that is what we have to accomplish at this stage. We beat everyone we should have, and we were just five strokes out of fourth place. The future is very-very bright at MSU."
Ela Grimwood and Kendall Wisenbaker led the team in the final round behind 1-under 71 scorecards. In the best round of her collegiate career, Grimwood started the day strong, collecting a pair of birdies on her fourth and fifth holes. She erased seven strokes from her second-round tally to finish tied for 44th.
Wisenbaker also drained a birdie on her fifth hole of the day. The veteran junior fired par on the front nine and 1-under on the back to round out the event tied for 24th overall.
"I did a better job of staying patient with myself today," Wisenbaker said. "I definitely didn't hit the ball as good as I could have and still managed to post a solid number. I didn't try to press and cause myself to make unforced errors. We had a strong finish as a team and this is a good start to the spring."
Aubree Jones led the Bulldogs for a good portion of the day, ending her first nine 2-under par. She collected two birdies on her final nine before ending the day with an even-par 72. Jones finished tied for 21st, marking the fourth tournament she has landed in the Top 25.
In her inaugural performance in the lineup, Blair Stockett led the team with a 4-over 220 over the three days to tie for 16th.
Athena Yang collected a pair of birdies to start her final round and added another on the back nine. The sophomore ended the round with a 3-over 75.
Playing as an individual, Clara Moyano opened her final round with back-to-back birdies and led the team with five on the day en route to carding a final-round 70 (-2). The sophomore transfer ended the event tied for 44th.
MSU returns to action Feb. 26-27 as it heads to Championship Country Club in Houston, Texas, for the Dickson Invitational.
