Blair Stockett led the Bulldogs in round one of UCF Challenge
Freshman Stockett Paces Bulldogs In Round One
February 04, 2018 | Women's Golf
ORLANDO, Fla. – In her first appearance on the travel team lineup, Mississippi State women's golfer Blair Stockett looked like a seasoned veteran on the links rather than a rookie, firing 1-under 71 Sunday to sit in fourth after the opening round of the UCF Challenge.Â
Â
The Magnolia State native led the Bulldogs to a 14-over 302 in a windy first round at Eagle Creek Golf Club. Â
Ginger Brown-Lemm's squad fought heavy wind and light rain throughout the first day of the spring season. It seemed to be no trouble for Stockett, however, as she rallied from a pair of early bogeys with birdies on holes 3, 4 and 8.Â
Â
"I just really had to stay patient starting out," Stockett said. "I knew the putts would fall eventually, so it was a matter of staying focused and making every shot count."
Â
Behind Stockett, sophomore Ela Grimwood fired a 4-over 76. Grimwood birdied the par 5, fourth to end the day tied for 34th.Â
Â
Kendall Wisenbaker carded a 77 and ended round one in 50th, while Athena Yang and Aubree Jones both notched 78s.Â
Â
The Bulldogs only individual, Clara Moyano, fired a 77 on the day.Â
Â
"Blair had an exceptional round today in her starting five debut," Brown-Lemm said. "She showed poise and confidence and it showed. Conditions were tough. We didn't play our best golf, but we led the field in pars with 60. We are pumped for tomorrow and ready to get back out there."Â
Â
MSU sits just two strokes from the Top 8. It resumes play for the second round Monday at 8 a.m.Â
