BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – On the second day of the Country Club of Birmingham Collegiate Invitational on Saturday, Mississippi State's Gregor Ramskogler and Stedman Strickland each recorded their first career singles wins as Bulldogs.
Ramskogler went a perfect 2-0 on the day, while Strickland battled back from a loss in his first match of the day to notch an epic comeback victory.
The Bulldog pair will team up for their third and final doubles match at 9 a.m. CT Sunday with the final round of singles action to follow. In that match, the State tandem will face Tulane's Hamish Stewart and Eric Wagner.
Ramksogler's first singles victory of the day – and of his MSU career – came in straight set fashion, with the rookie claiming a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Lipscomb's Pedro Uribe in the White Draw. In his second match of the day in the afternoon, he notched a 7-6(11), 6-3 triumph over Fernando Vargas of UAB.
On Sunday, Ramskogler is set to take on Kentucky's Kevin Humpfner at 10:30 a.m. in the consolation title match of his draw.
In the Houndstooth Draw, Strickland opened the day by dropping a hard-fought 7-5, 6-2 decision to Middle Tennessee's Jacob Pugh. The sophomore newcomer responded well to the adversity, however, en route to earning his first career singles win in the Maroon and White. The Jackson, Mississippi, native took a tight first set against Belmont's Grant Kelly, 7-6(4). Kelly went on to force a third set—a 10-point match tiebreaker. In the 10-point breaker, Strickland found himself down five match points at 9-5, but not out of the contest, as he went on to fend off Kelly for a hard-fought 7-6(4), 2-6, 1-0(9) victory.
Strickland will also take on a Wildcat Sunday in consolation action, as he is set to face UK's Arthur Chen in a noon start.
