PENSACOLA, Fla. – Rain may have delayed the start of the main draw at the 2018 USTA Pensacola Futures Championships, but it did not stop Mississippi State senior All-American Nuno Borges from doing what he does best.
The second-seeded Borges wasted very little time in the first match of his final fall tournament, notching a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Chenhe Li (ATP 1218) in a first-round bout that lasted under an hour at 56 minutes.
In the match, Borges was in command nearly the entire time, delivering four aces and taking advantage of eight double faults by Li, while going 5-of-7 in break point opportunities.
The first set saw Li take a 3-1 advantage, but Borges stormed back with authority. After holding serve to go up 4-3, Borges did not look back by winning 12 of the final 13 games of the match.
Borges will next face Juan Alejandro Hernandez Serrano (ATP 1333) in second-round action set to begin Friday at the Roger Scott Tennis Center.
