
Don’t Miss Saturday’s Pregame Flyover

STARKVILLE – Mississippi's Air National Guard will perform a flyover Saturday prior to kickoff between No. 21 Mississippi State and Arkansas.
A C-17 Globemaster III plane named "The Spirit of G.V. 'Sonny' Montgomery" will fly past Davis Wade Stadium at the conclusion of the national anthem. The game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
Primeknit A1 "Statesman" Uniform
Saturday is Senior Day for 20 Bulldogs, and when MSU takes Scott Field, it will pay tribute to MSU alum and World War II hero G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery. The Bulldogs will proudly don commemorative Primeknit A1 "Statesman" uniforms inspired by the C-17 Globemaster III, "The Spirit of G.V. 'Sonny' Montgomery" aircraft.
The commemorative jersey is available for purchase on www.adidas.com/us/hailstate and in retail stores in Starkville.
Pledge of Allegiance
Mississippi's Adjutant General and a 1982 Graduate of Mississippi State and the ROTC program, Major General Janson D. Boyles, who serves as the Commanding General of both the Mississippi Army and Air National Guard, will lead the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance on Saturday directly preceding the flyover. He will be accompanied on the field by the Assistant Adjutant General, Brigadier General Mike Nabors, who ensures the readiness of the 172nd Airlift Wing and Combat Readiness Training Center.
National Anthem
Saturday's national anthem will be performed acapella by Sergeant Landon Knowlton of the 288th Sapper Company of the Mississippi Army National Guard.
About G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery
Montgomery, a 1943 Mississippi State graduate, served in the United States Army as a second lieutenant during World War II where he was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor, Legion of Merit and Combat Infantry Badge. The Meridian native served on active duty during the Korean Conflict in the 31st National Guard Infantry Division. Montgomery had a long and distinguished career in the Mississippi National Guard, retiring with the rank of Major General after 35 years.
Montgomery was elected to the Mississippi State Senate in 1956. He served in the legislature for 10 years before being elected to the U.S. Congress in 1966. Montgomery served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1967-1997, where he championed veterans' issues and fought for a strong national defense. He enacted a GI Bill that gave members of the military funds to pay for college.
In a November 2005 ceremony at the White House, President George W. Bush awarded Montgomery the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor.
Montgomery became the third person in the United States to have a military fleet named in his honor. The C-17 remains in active use by the 172nd Airlift Wing of Jackson, Mississippi.
