STARKVILLE – Fall tennis is nearing its end for the Mississippi State men's tennis team, with one tournament remaining on the slate for a lone Bulldog in senior Nuno Borges.
The two-time All-American Borges is set to take the court in the main draw of the 2018 Pensacola Futures Championships, a USTA Futures event, held at Roger Scott Tennis Center in Pensacola, Florida. Borges enters the 32-player draw as the No. 2 singles seed with a current ATP ranking of 508.
Borges is set to open play against Chenhe Li of China, who is currently ranked No. 1218 in the world. Match time for the Maia, Porto, Portugal, native is to be determined
Other collegiate players already in the draw include Tulane's Ewan Moore, Florida State's Alex Knaff and South Alabama's Sacha Modica. More could be added, however, when qualifying play is complete.
This fall in futures and ATP Challenger tournaments, Borges has posted a 4-3 mark overall and advanced to the quarterfinals of the USTA Harlingen, Texas, Futures in October. He then followed up that performance with a pair of big victories in singles qualifying at the Charlottesville (Virginia) Challenger, including a straight-set win over former NCAA No. 1 Martin Redlicki and a three-set thriller over top-seeded Jan Choinski (ATP 272).
