PHILADELPHIA – After earning his fifth career Southeastern Conference Defensive Lineman of the Week honor Monday, Mississippi State preseason All-American Montez Sweat was named the Bednarik Player of the Week Tuesday for his dominant performance in the Bulldogs' 23-9 win against No. 8 Auburn last Saturday. The Maxwell Football Club presents the weekly award winner for the Bednarik Award, which is given annually to college football's defensive player of the year.
Sweat, a senior from Stone Mountain, Georgia, was unstoppable off the edge last Saturday, posting a career-best three sacks for a loss of 27 yards. He also forced one fumble and added two quarterback hurries that forced incompletions. He became the first Bulldog with three or more sacks in a game since Willie Evans had three versus Tulane on Sept. 17, 2005. He was only the third Bulldog in the last 20 years to achieve the feat and the first in a conference game since Ed Smith versus Arkansas on Nov. 21, 1998. All three of Sweat's sacks came in the second half.
Sweat is the SEC leader in sacks with 7.5, which ranks second nationally, and he is second in the SEC in tackles for loss with 10.0, which is tied for 12th nationally. He has turned in 18 sacks for his career in 19 games, which is seventh in MSU history.

Senior Bowl Defensive Senior of the Week (9/10)

Bednarik Player of the Week (10/9)
