VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. – Despite having four players in the top 20, the Mississippi State men's golf team fell short of the top 5 following Monday's two rounds of play on Monday.
Sophomore Cameron Clarke led the team with a 1-over 141 total to close the day tied for 12th. Three Bulldogs shot 2-over-par Monday as MSU shot a 7-over 567, good for sixth place at the par-70, 7,204-yard Old Overton Club.
"I am pleased with how we played today," MSU men's golf coach Dusty Smith said. "Last night we talked about everyone playing for each other and having five guys in the round all day. I felt like we did a nice job of that."
State will look to finish strong in Vestavia Hills as they tee off from the first hole tee box at 8 a.m. CT. Live updates will be available via Golfstat.
"I am excited for tomorrow," Smith said. "We need to make sure we have the correct mindset and focus for us to be successful."
State played strong in round one, and was third after shooting even. Sophomore Garrett Johnson led the team in the opener, shooting a 1-under 69, as freshman Ford Clegg and Clarke posted even 70s.
The highlight of round two was a hole-in-one from freshman Austin Vukovits on the par-3 eighth hole.
MSU shot 7-over in the final round of the day.
Senior Ross Bell, Clegg and Johnson all carded 1-over 141s to share 16th place. Vukovits shot 6-over-par Monday to place in a tie for 34th.
The Golf Dawgs wore pink polos on the Old Overton Club course Monday to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

"I am pleased with how we played today. Last night we talked about everyone playing for each other and having five guys in the round all day. I felt like we did a nice job of that. We struggled a bit coming down the stretch in round two. It's important that our focus is right all of the time, not just some of the time. I am excited for tomorrow. We need to make sure we have the correct mindset and focus for us to be successful."
