WEST POINT, Miss. – Another impressive outing on Monday put the Mississippi State women's golf team one shot off the lead entering final-round play at the Magnolia Invitational in West Point, Mississippi.
After taking a share of the lead following a 288 on Sunday at Old Waverly Golf Club, the Bulldogs came out Monday and fired the second-lowest round of the day with a 284. That stellar round put MSU in second place behind clubhouse leader Kennesaw State with a 4-under 572.
Tuesday's round, State's second-lowest of the season, tied for the ninth-best in program history.
"Today was another big step forward for our program," Coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. "We showed such resilience in adversity out there, and I could not be more proud. We have put ourselves in contention, and that is the goal for every event. We are committed to the process and are showing major strides in our performances as a result. Hail State!"
Sophomore Blair Stockett led the Dawgs on their 6,320-yard, par-72 home course, firing a 3-under-par 69 that matched her career best and moved her into a tie for sixth with a two-round total of 142 (-2). The Jackson, Mississippi, product started the day hot, sinking birdies on three of her first six holes to wrap the front nine at 4-under.
"I knew after yesterday that if I could stay patient I would be able to get some putts to fall," Stockett said. "It was great being able to help my team get into the mix going into the last day."
Freshman Hannah Levi continued firing low scores, following an opening-round 71 with a 2-under 70 on Monday. She moved into a tie for third, four shots off the lead, at 3-under 141.
Fellow rookie Lauren Miller continued to play consistent golf for the Bulldogs. She answered a pair of bogeys with two birdies to finish the day at even par and tied for 10th for the tournament with a 1-under 143.
Senior Kendall Wisenbaker bounced back from a tough opening round and shot a 1-over 73. She birdied three holes Monday to climb her way into a tie for 45th.
A strong front nine from senior Katie Holt helped her shoot a 75 on Monday and finish the opening two rounds tied for 30th at 4-over.
State's second lineup shaved 15 shots off its opening round and carded a 286 to move into a tie for seventh.
Sophomore Aubree Jones and junior Athena Yang led that group, with each carding a 2-under-par 70. Jones and Yang combined for nine birdies to finish the day tied for 22nd and 25th, respectively.
Junior Teri Doss rallied from a tough opening round and carded a 73 in her second round. Clara Moyano also carded a 73 to move into a tie for 25th.
Ela Grimwood heads into Tuesday tied with Wisenbaker for 45th place.
Auburn's Anika Bolcikova stands atop the individual leaderboard after two rounds.
Tuesday's third and final round will begin at 8 a.m. CT with a shotgun start. The second-place Bulldogs tee off from holes 1-3, while the second group of Dawgs go off Nos. 15-18.
