Maroon Grabs Game One of Fall World Series
October 11, 2018 | Baseball
Mangum, Skelton drive in three runs apiece to lead Maroon
STARKVILLE – Each team scratched across runs in the first inning, but Team Maroon was able to put together a pair of big innings on its way to a 9-4 victory over Team White in the first game of the Fall World Series on Thursday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field.
"It was a good night, with a really good crowd and I loved the atmosphere," said head coach Chris Lemonis. "Our guys are really competing right now, which is great to see. Peyton [Plumlee] settled in and pitched well to get the win. Jared Liebelt and Colby White helped solidify the bullpen and close it out. I'd like to see our defense play a little better and our pitchers pound the strike zone a bit more, but overall it was a good night."
Peyton Plumlee (1-0) got the start for Team Maroon and allowed two runs (one earned) on just four hits over four innings of work. The senior struck out four and walked one to earn the victory. Jared Liebelt threw two innings of one-run relief and Colby White closed out the game for Team Maroon with one run allowed in one inning of work.
Maroon scored in each of the first four innings, getting single runs in the first, second and third, before adding three runs in the fourth. Team Maroon then capped the scoring with three runs in the sixth inning. White score single runs in the first, third, fifth and seventh.
A dropped fly ball led to the opening run of the game, as Jordan Westburg's fly ball to right field was dropped and allowed the sophomore to land on third base. A double down the left field line from Landon Jordan scored Westburg to push Team White in front, 1-0.
In the bottom half of the first, Team Maroon saw three-straight hitters reach base, with Tanner Allen walking, Elijah MacNamee getting hit by a pitch and Justin Foscue singling. JT Ginn then worked a bases loaded walk to knot the score, 1-1.
Maroon took the lead with a run in the bottom of the second on a Jake Mangum sacrifice fly, before White got the equalizer on a Rowdey Jordan home run down the right field line in the top of the third.
Tied at 2-2, Maroon took the lead for good on a Dustin Skelton home run with one out in the third. After the first 1-2-3 inning of the game in the top of the fourth, Maroon struck with three runs on two hits, benefitting from three walks in the bottom half of the inning. A Josh Hatcher RBI single scored Allen, after he led off the inning with a walk. After Ginn walked to load the bases, Skelton plated the second run on an RBI ground out. Anthony Hickman capped the inning with an RBI single to make it 6-2 in favor of Team Maroon.
Rowdey Jordan made it happen again in the fifth for Team White, as he walked with two outs in the inning and came around to score on a Landon Jordan single later in the frame to cut the deficit to 6-3.
Hatcher and Ginn reached to start the sixth inning for Team Maroon, before Skelton pushed the first run of the inning across with a squeeze bunt. After a Benjamin Bell sacrifice bunt pushed runners to second and third, Mangum delivered with a two-run single to make it 9-3 for the Maroon.
Rowdey Jordan's second home run of the game accounted for the final run of the night in the top of the seventh.
For Team White, Jack Eagan (0-1) allowed three runs on six hits in three innings of work. He walked three and struck out two. Bryce Brock, Denver McQuary and Cole Gordon each threw one inning for Team White, with Brock and Gordon each allowing three runs.
