STARKVILLE, Miss. – Despite a solid weekend in Nashville, the Mississippi State women's track and field team dropped three spots in the USTFCCCA indoor rankings to No. 18 this week. On the men's side, MSU vaulted up 52 spots to come in at No. 85.
"These rankings reflect what we did this past weekend," MSU coach Steve Dudley said. "People are taking notice, but as I've always said, i's the ranking at the end of the year that matters most."
Marco Arop made a huge contribution to Mississippi State's ranking resume after winning the 800m at the Vanderbilt Invitational with a time of 1:48.12. Arop's time is the second-fastest in the country this season.
Arop was joined in the 800m by Dejon Devroe and Daniel Nixon, who both sit inside qualifying position for the national championships. The three runners' times sit second, third and fourth in school history.
A school-record performance from Brianna Smith in the weight throw highlighted a weekend full of personal bests for the MSU women. Smith threw the weight a record 21.05m (69-0.75) for the ninth-best mark nationally. Logan Boss claimed a victory in the high jump by matching her mark from the previous week of 1.80, which ranks 11th in the NCAA.
Charlotte Cayton-Smith moved into qualifying position in the 800m, while Tiffany Flynn pushed her way into the championship picture in the triple jump.
