MSU Women's Tennis Earns Season-Opening Sweep Over Arkansas State
January 22, 2018 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Following a morning of showers and storms that gave way to sunny skies in the afternoon on Monday, the Mississippi State women's tennis team got off to a roaring start in the 2018 dual match season by sweeping a doubleheader, as the Bulldogs (2-0) earned consecutive 5-0 victories against visiting Arkansas State (0-4).
"Today was a great opportunity to get some matches under our belt," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "We played different opponents every time so that the girls had a different look each time. First matches of the year…there are going to be some nerves. We just needed those opportunities to go out and battle."
Match 1 – Mississippi State 5, Arkansas State 0
State got a quick start to the day by making quick work of the Red Wolves in doubles. On court 1, MSU's tandem of Madison Harrison and Khrystyna Vozniak gave the Bulldogs an early advantage by taking a 6-1 victory. A few moments later, Bulldogs Sara Lizariturry and Anastasia Rentouli clinched the doubles point for the Maroon and White with a 6-1 win at No. 3. Although MSU's duo of Magda Adaloglou and Janina Braun dropped a hard-fought 6-3 decision at No. 2, the Bulldogs earned an early 1-0 lead and would not look back.
Singles was a similar story for State, with the Bulldogs winning the first set on all six courts. Braun made quick work of Arkansas State's Anita Detlava, taking a 6-0, 6-2 decision in her A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre singles debut at the No. 2 position. Rentouli likewise cruised to victory with a 6-1, 6-1 decision on court 4 over the Red Wolves' Berta Masdevall Masip.
The Bulldogs earned the clincher on court 6 when the Vozniak downed ASU's Kirsty Venter 6-2, 6-1 just moments before Harrison earned State's fifth point of the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph at No. 1, downing Arkansas State's Shelby King.
Match 2 – Mississippi State 5, Arkansas State 0
The second half of the twinbill was quite similar to the first, as the Bulldogs earned the doubles point rather quickly to take a 1-0 lead. This time, however, the Maroon and White would take all three courts, with Lizariturry and Rentouli earning the clincher on court 2, 6-1 over ASU's tandem of Detlava and Masip.
In singles action, State once again earned four points to seal the deal, as Harrison, Braun, Adaloglou and Vozniak each earned straight-set victories to propel the Bulldogs to victory.
With the wins, State moved to 6-0 all-time against ASU, including a 5-0 lead in Starkville. In addition, the Bulldogs have compiled an impressive 25 straight home non-conference victories. In home openers, the Maroon and White have now won seven in a row and 10 out of its last 11.
Next Up For MSU…
With a pair of wins under their belt, the Bulldogs will next travel to Berkley, Calif., for ITA Kick-Off Weekend hosted by Cal. There, MSU will take on No. 12 Texas this Friday, Jan. 26, at 3 p.m. CT before facing either No. 11 host Cal or UNLV on Saturday.
