Women’s Hoops Climbs To No. 3 In AP Poll, Hosts Luncheon Thursday
January 15, 2018 | Women's Basketball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Off to the second-best start in program history at 19-0, the Mississippi State women's basketball team moved up to No. 3 in this week's Associated Press Top 25 Poll.
The only SEC team and one of three squads nationally without a loss, the Bulldogs matched their highest AP ranking in school history as they earned a 66th-straight week in the poll and 30th-consecutive week in the Top 10.
State's run in the Top 25 is the sixth-longest active streak in the country, while its tenure in the Top 10 is the fifth-longest current run.
Vic Schaefer's squad remained atop the SEC standings at 5-0 as it defeated in-state rival Ole Miss 76-45 on Thursday and Alabama 75-61 on Sunday to wrap a two-game homestand.
Teaira McCowan led MSU's win against Ole Miss, the Bulldogs' largest margin of victory in the series, with 25 points and 13 rebounds.
McCowan added another double-double, her 14th of the year, with 19 points and 16 boards against Alabama. Senior Victoria Vivians paced the Bulldogs' win against the Crimson Tide, tallying 21 points to go with seven rebounds.
One of the top-scoring duos in the country, McCowan and Vivians rate third and fourth in the SEC in scoring this season, averaging 20.9 and 19.3 ppg, respectively. McCowan also tops the conference in rebounding (12.9 rpg) and field goal percentage (65.0 percent).
The Bulldogs have an open date Thursday before heading to Knoxville on Sunday for a showdown against No. 6 Tennessee. Tip for the game is set for 2 p.m. CT on ESPN2.
Although the Hump won't be filled with basketball action, MSU will host another Hail State Hoops Luncheon in Mize Pavilion on Thursday. The program begins at 11:30 a.m., and cost for the event is $12 per person.
