Vivians, McCowan Named To Wooden Award Top 25 Watch List

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State's Victoria Vivians and Teaira McCowan have been named to the Top 25 watch list for the prestigious John R. Wooden Award, the Los Angeles Athletic Club announced Thursday morning.
Vivians was on the initial list for the award, presented to the nation's top women's basketball player, while McCowan was added to the Top 25.
McCowan paces Mississippi State in scoring with an SEC third-best 20.8 ppg. The Brenham, Texas, native is knocking down shots at a 64.5-percent clip, the best in the league and seventh-highest in the nation.
She has also grabbed 12.7 rebounds per game, second-most in the SEC and the fifth-best tally in the country. McCowan has grabbed 10-plus rebounds in 15 of MSU's 17 games and registered a double-double 12 times, the most in the conference and the fourth-best tally in NCAA Division I.
McCowan helped State improve to 17-0 and 3-0 in SEC play by recording her second 30-point, 20-rebound game of the year as she scored 31 points to go with 20 boards in a road victory at LSU. It was her second 30-point, 20-rebound game of the year, tying for the second-most in a season by a major conference player in the last 15 seasons.
McCowan has stepped up her production through the first three league games, scoring 25.0 ppg and grabbing 13.7 boards.
Vivians has enjoyed the best start to her career, scoring at a 19.4 clip while knocking down 54.2 percent of her shots from the field, 41 percent from the 3-point line and 83.9 percent from the free-throw line.
The Carthage, Miss., native has scored double figures in 16 games this season, including eight 20-point games and a pair of 30-point efforts.
Earlier this season Vivians, the SEC's active leading career scorer, became the third player in Mississippi State history to score 2,000-career points, joining former Bulldog greats LaToya Thomas and Tan White.
Vivians has averaged 17.7 ppg and shot the basketball at a 51.2-percent clip in SEC games. She is also pulling down 6.0 rpg in league play.
Vivians, McCowan and their Bulldog teammates host Ole Miss Thursday at 8 p.m. on the SEC Network. It will be StarkVegas Night, with fans encouraged to wear black to Humphrey Coliseum.
