September 02, 2017 | Cross Country
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. — No worries whatsoever about living up to expectations.
Despite less-than-ideal situations with rain and mud, No. 23 Mississippi State ushered in the 2017 campaign with a first-place finish at the Golden Eagle Cross Country Invitational Saturday morning.
MSU had five runners place in the Top 10, led by Stephanie Peterson at 18:54.9 to place second. In third was Kristy Terp at 19:19.5, while Audrey Honiotes was fifth at 19:25.4.
Southern Illinois' Megan Krolak was the medalist at 18:52.6. Behind MSU in the team standings were Auburn, Southern Illinois, Western Kentucky and Tennessee State, respectively.
"It was a good start, and it gives us something to build on," MSU coach Houston Franks said. "With the weather, I wasn't sure what kind of times we would have, but everyone pushed through and didn't look for excuses.
"I thought the freshman really performed well, both the men and women. The key is improving from this meet to the next."
Rounding out the Top 10 for Mississippi State were Katherine Badham (19:35.3) and Emma Tucker (19:52.0).
On the men's side, MSU recorded 57 points to finish third. Auburn took top honors, followed by Tennessee Tech.
The Bulldogs had two Top 10 finishers with Stephen Jones (19:58.8) and JT Mackay (20:03.1) at No. 8 and No. 9, respectively.
MSU is back in action two weeks for the Falcon Classic in Montevallo, Ala.
