When senior golfer Taylor Grant decided that he was going to transfer from Oklahoma State to Mississippi State, he knew that the transition was going to be difficult for him.
Â
"It was a big change, a big transition [transferring]. I came here without knowing anybody. I didn't know the lay of the land or how anything works around here," the Abilene, Texas native said.
Â
Luckily for Grant, Starkville ended up being the perfect fit.
Â
"I was able to surround myself with people who were very helpful and supportive," Grant said. "The people on this campus and in this town are so welcoming and loving towards everyone."
Â
Starkville wasn't a hard sell to Grant.
Â
"Once I visited the campus, I was sold. The campus is beautiful. The town is awesome and the people are great," Grant said.
Â
Academics have been a major focus for Grant during his time in Starkville. He believes that his success on and off the course is due to his academic advisors and tutors.
Â
"There has been so much [academic] help offered to me during my time here with my advisors, tutors, and professors."
Â
The fourth year found the guidance that he needed once he arrived from his academic advisor, Linda Moore.
Â
"When I first got here, [she] really helped me with structuring my schedule and helping me pick classes," Grant said. "I didn't know what to do."
Â
He also found help in the form of teammates and coaches.
Â
"The best thing about State is that everybody wants to see me succeed, my coaches and teammates," Grant said. "If I ever have a question or need help with something, those people will always do anything they can to help me."
Â
His success in the classroom earned him national recognition, as he was name a Golf Coaches Association of America All-American scholar following last season. Grant said that help from Moore, his coaches and his teammates have allowed him to focus on golf and even the small lessons that it has taught him.
Â
"Just like in life, you're going to have things happen, you're going to have bad breaks and unlucky circumstances but it's all about what you make with it," Grant said. "It's about not looking at the past, but looking forward."
