STARKVILLE, Miss. – With the fall tennis season fast approaching, the Mississippi State men's tennis team wrapped up one of its most successful summers in program history.
State netters reeled in 154 ATP points over the summer, with Reigning Southeastern Conference Player of the Year Nuno Borges bringing in 105 of those points.
Most recently, Borges earned a bronze medal for Portugal in the World University Games in Taipei—reaching the semifinals by downing three ranked foes. After breezing through a first round match against France's Robin Cocouvi, he downed Texas Longhorn Yuta Ito (ATP 1870), Anthony Jackie Tang (ATP 1227) of Columbia University and Allesandro Ceppellini (ATP 1447) before dropping a hard-fought match to former Michigan All-American Jason Jung (ATP 271).
Borges (ATP 583) won four total ITF Futures tournaments this summer, taking singles crowns in the Portugal F9 Futures (June 27-July 2) and Portugal F14 Futures (Aug. 1-6) and winning doubles titles in the Portugal F8 Futures (June 20-25) and Portugal F9 Futures. He also finished as the runner-up in the Portugal F8 Futures tournament.
Giovanni Oradini (ATP 1413) also turned in a stellar summer and had a knack against top-seeded competition, earning 39 ATP points in the process.
After making it through qualifying in the Italy F19 Futures—his first tournament of the summer—he knocked off top-seeded Walter Trusendi (ATP 462) in straight sets en route to reaching the quarterfinals.
In the Italy F23 Futures tournament, Oradini again showed his ability to defeat top competition by having a hand in beating top-seeded doubles pair Federico Coria/Tomas Lipovsek Puches in three sets.
Oradini saved his best doubles performance for last, as he and his partner reached the finals of the Italy F24 Futures doubles tournament.
Strahinja Rakic (ATP 1870) reeled in seven ATP points over the summer, with his best performance coming in the doubles event at the Macedonia F1 Futures tournament. As part of the fourth-seeded pair, he and partner Manuel Pena Lopez reached the semifinals before dropping the match to the second-seeded pair of Tsung-Hua Yang (ATP 570)/Dane Propoggia (ATP 330).
Trevor Foshey teamed up with fellow Bulldog Borges in the Portugal F13 Futures doubles tournament, reaching the semifinals before dropping a match to top-seeded pair and eventual champions Altug Celikbilek/Anil Yuksel in three sets.
Foshey also played in both the singles and doubles events in the Loriet Open at The Bradenton Country Club, reaching the semifinals in both tournaments.
Niclas Braun fared well in a tournament in his home nation of Germany, reaching the final round. In the Germany F4 Futures, Braun worked his way through the qualifying phase before dropping a match to Valentin Guenther (ATP 1668)
Newcomer Florian Broska (ATP 1615) dropped his lone match in the Germany F4 Futures to Dominik Bartels (ATP 1678).
Freshman Hunter Harrison played his way into the semifinals of the ITA Summer Circuit tournament at the University of Alabama from July 14-16. As the eighth-seeded player, he downed Jack Steib, Alexander Depascual and 16-seed Nelson Stafford before dropping a three-set battle to No. 4 seed Justin Ghavami.
