Smith Announces Men’s Golf Schedule for 2017-18 Season

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Ten regular-season tournaments, highlighted by the Mississippi State-hosted Old Waverly College Championship, comprise the inaugural schedule for new Bulldog men's golf coach Dusty Smith.
"I am so excited to announce our 2017-2018 Mississippi State golf schedule," Smith said. "Our program will be competing against top-level competition, as well as playing on some tremendous and prestigious golf courses around the country. I believe each tournament will help us in our preparation of getting a little bit better each and every time we tee it up. The goal is always to be better today than we were yesterday and better tomorrow than we were today."
The Smith era gets underway Sept. 11-12 at the Kiawah Intercollegiate in Charleston, S.C. After a week off, the Bulldogs head to Cincinnati, Ohio, on Sept. 25 to play in the Bearcat Intercollegiate for the second-straight season.
"We begin our season at the Ocean Course, which has hosted the Ryder Cup and several major championships throughout the years," Smith said. "This will be a new addition to the schedule and we are looking forward to competing."
MSU returns to SEC country Oct. 9-10, traveling to the Alabama-hosted Jerry Pate Intercollegiate for the eighth-consecutive year.
"The Jerry Pate Invitational is always one of the top tournaments in the country. Old Overton is a championship golf course that will test us against a very strong field," Smith said.
After wrapping the fall slate at the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational in Vero Beach, Fla., on Oct. 23, the Bulldogs return to the "Sunshine State" Feb. 17-18 to play in the spring-opening SunTrust Gator Invitational, one of four new tournaments on the schedule.
After a two-year absence, the Bulldogs return to the Louisiana Classics in Lafayette, La., on Feb. 26-27.
"We open up the spring at the Gator Invitational before heading over to Lafayette, La., for the 33rd annual Louisiana Classics," Smith added. "This is a long-standing event that hosts a variety of top-ranked programs, and the community does a tremendous job in supporting that event."
A jam-packed month of March starts with the Auburn-hosted Tiger Invitational (March 4-6).
Two new tournaments round out the Bulldogs' final road trips of the regular season. The first comes March 16-18 when MSU heads east to Statesboro, Ga., to play in The Schenkel. Five days later, State makes a cross-country trek to Palm Desert, Calif., to play in the Kansas State-hosted Big Horn Invitational.
"March is a busy month in which we head over to Statesboro, Ga., for the Schenkel Invitational and then out to California for a new event this year, the Big Horn Invitational," Smith said.
In a tradition unlike any other, Mississippi State wraps the regular season by hosting the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship April 16-17 at historic Old Walverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss.
"We round out the regular season with our home event at Old Waverly." Smith said. "The community of Starkville and Mississippi State do a great job in supporting this event, and we are looking forward to playing in front of the home crowd on our home golf course."
The Bulldogs' home event serves as a final tune-up for the SEC Championship, which will once again be hosted at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Ga., April 26-30.
NCAA regional play will be held at various locations May 14-16, and Karsten Creek Country Club in Stillwater, Okla. will host this year's NCAA Championship May 25-29.
