Riley Self Named Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American
June 07, 2017 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Riley Self's outstanding first season at Mississippi State is not over, but the freshman is being recognized for his work on the mound, as Collegiate Baseball named Self to its Freshman All-American team on Wednesday.
The Coldwater, Mississippi native currently sits tied for the team lead in appearances with 30 on the year. He holds a 5-1 record with eight saves while owning a 3.59 ERA. In 47.2 innings pitched, Self has struck out 60 batters, which is good enough for second on the Bulldogs pitching staff.
By earning the honor, Self becomes the 34th Diamond Dawg to be selected as a Freshman All-American and the first pitcher since Jonathan Holder in 2012. The Bulldogs now have had back-to-back Freshman All-Americans after Jake Mangum took the honor in 2016.
Self's award adds to MSU's individual player awards list after slugger Brent Rooker reeled in numerous honors, including Southeastern Conference Player of the Year and First Team All-SEC accolades, as well as Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Year and First Team All-American and the winner of the C Spire Ferriss Trophy. Rooker was also named a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award.
Ryan Gridley joined Rooker as a First Team All-SEC selection and was recently named a semifinalst for the Brooks Wallace Award, going to the nation's best shortstop. Mangum made the second team in addition to the SEC All-Defensive Team.
Gridley, Mangum, Cody Brown, Hunter Stovall and Jacob Billingsley were also recently named to the Hattiesburg All-Regional Team with Brown being tabbed as Most Outstanding Player.
Self and the rest of the Diamond Dawgs will re-take the field on at 8 p.m. CT Saturday in Game One of the Baton Rouge Super Regional. The game will be televised by ESPN2.
