STARKVILLE, Miss. – Good news continues to pour in for the Mississippi State men's tennis team, with three Bulldogs being selected to the 2017 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, to be held May 24-29 in Athens, Ga.
Sophomore Nuno Borges received an automatic singles bid on Wednesday, while Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey earned an at-large doubles selection.
"We're very happy for Nuno, Nic and Trevor and proud of this achievement," head coach Matt Roberts said. "Those three have worked hard to improve and it's paying off now. Each player represents MSU so well and embodies what a Bulldog is supposed to be."
After receiving a No. 4 seed, Borges becomes the seventh player in program history to earn a Top 8 NCAA Singles seeding. The sophomore joins Daniel Courcol (1993), Larent Orsini (1994), Thomas Dupré (1997-1998), Marco Baron (2000-2001), Romain Ambert (2002) and Romain Bogaerts (2013) as the only players in MSU history to achieve the feat. With his automatic bid, Borges also becomes MSU's first All-American since 2013 (Romain Bogaerts).
In addition to his NCAA Singles selection, Borges was also named the SEC Player of the Year while earning All-SEC First Team honors on Wednesday. This season, Borges has earned a 31-6 record overall in singles play while leading the SEC with a 19-3 record at the No. 1 spot. The sophomore has racked up a staggering 21 ranked singles wins this season while four victories over top-10 foes.
Joining Borges in Athens will be the sophomore duo of Braun and Foshey, who earned an at-large bid after a stellar season on the doubles court. The tandem has defeated 10 ranked teams this season, most recently posting an upset over Georgia's No. 2 ranked Robert Loeb and Jan Zielinski at the SEC finals.
The duo leads MSU with a 19-11 record on the season and has clinched five doubles points for State this year. The Bulldog pair is one of nine doubles teams from the SEC to receive at-large bids.
The draw for the 64-player NCAA Singles and 32-team Doubles Championships will be released closer to the start of the tournament. First-round action begins Wednesday, May 25, at Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
