May 02, 2017 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – For the 26th time in program history, Mississippi State men's tennis (20-8) has secured its spot in the NCAA Team Championships. The Bulldogs will be packing their bags for Oklahoma as the Maroon & White earned a No. 2 seed in the Norman Regional and will face No. 3 Southern Methodist (13-11) on Friday, May 12.
Host Oklahoma (15-10), the No. 14 national seed, will take on No. 4 seeded Bryant (12-13) also on Friday, with match times to be determined. The winners of the first round contests will face off on Saturday, May 14, with a trip to the NCAA Round of 16 in Athens, Ga., on the line.
"We've had a great season so far, but our guys are still hungry to keep improving and getting better," head coach Matt Roberts said. "Oklahoma is a great place to play tennis, so we're excited to be heading out there next week. We're going to prepare like we always have, the routine will be the same. Every match is another opportunity to get better and we're looking forward to doing that against some great opponents."
The Bulldogs have face SMU three times, with the Mustangs taking all three decisions. In addition to Tuesday's selection being MSU's 26th appearance as a program, the postseason berth also marks State's seven-straight season going to the NCAAs.
MSU has complied a 23-21 record overall in the NCAA Team Championship, while earning a 17-4 mark in the opening round. The Bulldogs have advanced as far as the NCAA Team Championship semifinals as a program (1994, 1998).
Tickets
Information on tickets for the first two rounds in Norman has not been released yet by OU, but will be made available at a later date.
Up Next
On Wednesday, MSU will find out what Bulldogs will qualify for the NCAA Individual Championships (May 24-29). Last season, Rishab Agarwal and Mate Cutura earned NCAA singles bids for the Maroon & White.
