Ryan Gridley Named Brooks Wallace Award Semifinalist

STARKVILLE, Miss. – In the midst of a career-best season, Mississippi State junior Ryan Gridley has been named one of 13 semifinalists for the 2017 Brooks Wallace Award, the College Baseball Foundation announced.
The award, sponsored by Mizuno, honors the nation's top shortstop and will be presented this summer by the College Baseball Foundation. It is named for former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace, who played for the Red Raiders from 1977 to 1980. Wallace died of leukemia at the age of 27.
Hitting .327 on the year, Gridley ranks second at MSU in batting average, courtesy of his 11 doubles, six home runs and 36 RBIs. Gridley is just one of two Bulldogs this season to have started all 54 games in 2017, with 53 of those having come at shortstop. Defensively, Gridley has recorded 80 putouts and a team-high 146 assists, which have led to his involvement in 28 of State's 33 double plays.
Along with his on-field successes, Gridley has thrived off the field as he is a 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-District selection.
Gridley and the rest of the Diamond Dawgs will retake the field Friday against No. 5 LSU for a 6:30 p.m. CT first pitch on SEC Network+.
