Brent Rooker Named 2017 Ferriss Trophy Finalist

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Brent Rooker has a chance to add another honor to his already stellar 2017 season.
The redshirt junior was selected as a finalist for the 2017 C Spire Ferriss Trophy, which is awarded annually to the top college baseball player in Mississippi.
The other finalists include Southern Miss' Taylor Braley, Matt Wallner and Dylan Burdeaux, along with Delta State's Zach Shannon.
The five finalists were chosen by a panel of Major League Baseball scouts who cover Mississippi and by college baseball coaches in Mississippi. The award will be presented at a ceremony on May 22 at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in Jackson.
Rooker has led the Southeastern Conference in several offensive categories for much of the season. His 20 home runs stands first in the SEC and is top-five nationally. He also leads the SEC in batting average, RBIs, doubles, slugging percentage, on base percentage and total bases, and has been named SEC Player of the Week three times this season.
The Germantown, Tennessee native was also named to the Golden Spikes Award midseason watch list in addition to being named Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week twice. Rooker earned NCBWA Hitter of the Week honors twice and Player of the Month for the month of March.
Jake Mangum won the award in 2016. The Bulldogs have not had back-to-back winners since Chris Stratton and Hunter Renfroe won the award in 2012 and 2013, respectively.
Fans will be able to vote for their favorite player starting May 15 at noon CT until May 20 at noon. The fan voting will account for 10 percent of the overall vote, with the other 90 percent being determined by MLB scouts and college baseball coaches in Mississippi.
