Six Former Diamond Dawgs On MLB Opening Day Rosters
April 03, 2017 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – With 57 former Diamond Dawgs having reached Major League Baseball, six of those former Mississippi State baseball players are on 2017 Opening Day rosters.
Four of those were members of the 2013 MSU team that reached the College World Series championship series, while a total of seven from that team have reached the major league level.
Kendall Graveman (2010-13) will get the start for the Oakland Athletics on Monday at 9 p.m. CT on ESPN2, which makes Graveman the first Diamond Dawg to serve as an Opening Day starting pitcher since Paul Maholm for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2009.
Adam Frazier (2011-13) will lead off for the Pittsburgh Pirates on Opening Day against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, while Mitch Moreland (2005-07) will be in the opposing dugout as he enters his first season as a member of the Red Sox after a 2016 American League Gold Glove season at first base for the Texas Rangers.
New York Yankees relief pitcher Jonathan Holder (2012-14) pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Rays. Also entering his first full MLB season, San Diego Padres outfielder Hunter Renfroe (2011-13) made his name known when he was called up last September by earning National League Player of the Week Honors. Renfroe and the Padres will take on the Los Angeles Dodgers at 3 p.m. CT on ESPN on Opening Day. Tyler Moore (2008) will start the season in a reserve role with the Miami Marlins.
While not on the 25-man roster, former New York Yankee and current Atlanta Brave relief pitcher Jacob Lindgren is on the Braves' 40-man roster and assigned to the 60-day disabled list.
Former Diamond Dawgs at the MLB level reaches beyond the players as Buck Showalter (1977) is the Manager for the Baltimore Orioles, Chris Maloney (1982-83) is the St. Louis Cardinals' Third Base Coach, Will Clark (1983-85) serves as a San Francisco Giants Special Assistant and Jeff Brantley (1982-85) is a broadcaster for the Cincinnati Reds.
Throughout the 2017 MLB season and Minor League Baseball seasons, updates will be given on former Diamond Dawgs within both levels of pro baseball.
