April 03, 2017 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – The leader in nearly every offensive category, junior first baseman Brent Rooker has been named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week following a week in which he posted a 1.000 slugging percentage with 17 total bases.
Rooker becomes the first to win multiple SEC Player of the Week awards this season (Feb. 17), which brings his career count for such honors to three.
State is fresh off a 4-0 week highlighted by a sweep of No. 19 Ole Miss on the road, which stretch MSU's current win streak to seven games, six of which coming from back-to-back SEC series sweeps.
Rooker went 7-for-17 (.412) at the plate over the week with all of his hits having been for extra bases (five doubles, one triple and one home run) for five RBIs. The slugger also registered three multi-hit games and two multi-RBI games on the week. His hot week led to an extension of his career-best 14-game hit streak and a 16-game reached base streak.
Looking at 2017 as a whole, Rooker leads the SEC in batting average (.422), slugging percentage (.890), on-base percentage (.511), RBIs (43), doubles (18), total bases (97) and stolen bases (14). Rooker ranks second in hits (46) and home runs (9).
His 18 doubles lead the nation, while his .890 slugging percentage ranks third and his.422 batting average sits 12th in Division I baseball.
Rooker and the rest of the Bulldogs will return to the field on Tuesday, April 4 at 6:30 p.m. CT for the first of two midweeks in two days for MSU against the Golden Panthers at Dudy Noble Field.
