MSU Battles In First Round of SEC Championship
April 21, 2017 | Women's Golf
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Jessica Peng and her Mississippi State teammates show the fight of a Bulldog on Friday at the SEC Women's Golf Championship in Birmingham, Ala.
A strong finish to her opening round put her in 19th place as she led MSU to the clubhouse in a tie for 10th place with No. 1 Alabama at 7-over-par 295. No. 20 Texas A&M closed Friday in the lead with a 6-under 282.
"We are finishing this season with all we've got," MSU coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. "Of the nine players on our roster, three are out with injuries and our No. 1, Jessica Peng, is playing very sick. Overall, today was a very good day. We did not start out well, but we managed to calm down by the time we made the turn at 5-over. We went to work on the back nine and finished 4-under on the last three holes to finish the day tied with the No.1 team in the NCAA, Alabama. These ladies have fight in them and they were not going to let it slip away."
"Coach Vic Schaefer was kind enough to come out to the barn and talk to the team before we left. He reminded them that they have to want to be in the moment (at an SEC Championship) to be aggressive, and they had to compete or stay on the bus. They took that powerful message to heart. We are learning and growing as a young team, and I look forward to the next two days to watch these ladies work hard."
After a double bogey on the second, Peng bounced back with a birdie on No. 7 and ended her front nine with a 1-over 37. She parred five of her first six on the back nine before firing birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 to finish the day with an even-pa 72.
"I wasn't really sure what happen on No. 2," Peng said. "After the bad shot, I knew that I had to start paying more attention to each shot and really focus on my game. Especially since I haven't been feeling well this week, I really had to focus on each individual shot, and it ended up working out well."
Senior Ji Eun Baik carded her second-best first round total of the season Friday with a 1-over 73 that tied her for 27th. She quickly jumped out to a strong start, using birdies on the par-5 third and the 430-yard ninth to end the front nine 1-under. Baik ended the day tied for 27th overall.
In her first SEC Championship, freshman Teri Doss played like a veteran as she carded a 74. Doss used a pair of birdies on the back nine to end the day tied for 36th.
Competing in her second SEC Championship, Katie Holt birdied the very challenging seventh and the long, narrow par-5 11th to complete her day tied for 52nd with a 76.
Rookie Ela Grimwood fired a 78 in her first postseason round to sit in a tie for 65th position.
MSU starts the second round of the SEC Championship at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
