Borges Named To SEC Community Service Team
April 18, 2017 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Highlighting his volunteer efforts over the past season at Mississippi State, sophomore and men's tennis standout Nuno Borges has been named to the 2017 Southeastern Conference Community Service Team, the league office announced on Tuesday.
All SEC-sponsored sports have had a Community Service Team since 2004, with at-large teams for men's and women's sports being chosen from 1999-2003. MSU's Rishab Agarwal earned the distinction for the Bulldogs last season.
"I am very happy to receive this honor," Borges said of his selection. "I've enjoyed the opportunity to give back to the community and university that I love. MSU is my family, so it's always a great feeling to give back when I can."
Borges was one of 10 members on the SEC Community Service Team for men's tennis, with Ole Miss and Vanderbilt not submitting any members for the 2017 season.
A native of Maia, Porto, Portugal, Borges has made a huge impact on the MSU campus and Starkville community since joining the Bulldogs in the spring of 2016. The sophomore has participated in many university-led initiatives across campus to spread the game of tennis. He's also donated his time at M-Club meetings, in an effort to better student-athlete relationships.
"Nuno is very deserving of this award," head coach Matt Roberts said. "I'm proud of the way he represents the school and our team. He's not only a leader on the court, but also in the classroom and in the community."
In addition to his volunteer work, this spring Borges won MSU's Newsom Award (given to the top student for each team on campus) after his hard work in the classroom. On the court, Borges leads MSU with a 29-5 record in singles play, while earning 19 ranked victories this season. The sophomore has climbed as high as third in the nation for his outstanding singles play.
Up Next
The Bulldogs are idle until the start of the SEC Championship in Knoxville. MSU will face the winner of Alabama and Vanderbilt on Thursday, April 27 at 5 p.m. CT.
