April 14, 2017 | Track & Field
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Junior Brianna Smith tossed a personal best 60.38m in the hammer throw Thursday night to pick up her first victory of the season.
Smith, already the owner of the second best mark in school history, improved upon her mark to inch closer to the school record of 62.93m set by Favian Cowards in 2012.
Also in California, Mia Meydrich grabbed 20th place finish in the 10,000m run after posting the second best mark in school history at 34:41.05. In the men's 10,000m run, JT Mackay finished 28th after running 31:37.68.
Over in Mobile, Ala., three Bulldogs are competing in the decathlon and heptathlon. Senior JaQuarius Wilson is the leader in the men's decathlon after day one, accumulating 3,496 points. In the women's heptathlon, Zaria Tillman is the current frontrunner with 3,186 points and her teammate Shayla Broughton is right on her tail with 3,066 points.
"This was a good start to the weekend for us," MSU coach Steve Dudley said. "Brianna and Mia are both getting close to school records, and we hope they are each able to continue progressing and hit that mark. I am also happy with the performance of our decathletes and haptathletes. We will see what they are able to do today as they continue in their events."
