April 12, 2017 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Already a three-time Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, two-time NCBWA National Hitter of the Week and Perfect Game/Rawlings Player of the Week in 2017, Mississippi State junior Brent Rooker has now been named to the Golden Spikes Midseason Watch List.
Annually presented to the top amateur baseball player in the country by USA Baseball, the 40th Golden Spikes Award will be presented on June 29 in Los Angeles.
The midseason watch list features 40 of the nation's top amateur players from the college ranks. The Golden Spikes Award Advisory Board will continue to maintain a rolling list of athletes, allowing players to play themselves into consideration for the award before announcing the semifinalists on May 31.
Coming off a six-home run week that led to 13 home runs, a .625 batting average and a 1.813 slugging percentage, Rooker collected SEC Player of the Week honors, along with National Player of the Week recognition from three publications.
The Midseason All-American leads the SEC in batting average (.450), slugging percentage (.992), on-base percentage (.547), hits (58), RBIs (56), doubles (19), home runs (15), total bases (128) and stolen bases (15). Rooker also leads the nation in hits, RBIs, slugging percentage and total bases, while ranking second in batting average, doubles and home runs, along with being third in on-base percentage.
Rooker and the rest of the No. 13 Bulldogs will return to SEC play this weekend for a three-game series at No. 17 South Carolina that opens Friday at 6 p.m. CT.
