No. 17 MSU Routs Tennessee, 6-1
April 01, 2017 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Saturday's outcome was never in jeopardy for 17th-ranked Mississippi State (15-5, 6-2 SEC) as the Bulldogs hammered visiting Tennessee (9-11, 1-7 SEC) from the onset to end the weekend on a high note.
The 6-1 win improved MSU's record to 15-5 on the season as the Bulldogs recorded their sixth conference win of the year.
"Incredible effort from our entire team today," head coach Matt Roberts said. "It felt great to have our hard work pay off today with a big win. It's always good to finish the weekend with a win, but now we're looking ahead to training for two big home matches next weekend."
The Bulldogs face No. 7 Texas A&M next Friday at 3 p.m. CT, before hosting their final home match of the season against LSU on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
MSU sprinted out to an early lead against UT on Saturday as the Bulldogs took the doubles point to kickoff the match. Nuno Borges and Giovanni Oradini defeated their Vol foes 6-3, before Mate Cutura and Vaughn Hunter clinched the point seconds later with a 6-2 win.
"I thought we turned in a great performance in doubles play today," Roberts said. "We've put a lot of attention into that area of our game this season and our guys have improved tremendously."
The match on court one for No. 31 Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey was suspended with Volunteers Timo Stodder and Luis Valero leading 5-2.
The Bulldogs would continue their dominance into singles play as MSU grabbed all six first sets to start out. It would be Foshey on court five who would collect the first singles win of the afternoon as the sophomore won easily, 6-1, 6-1 over UT's Jack Schipanski. The win moved Foshey's record at the No. 5 spot to 2-0 on the season.
Leading 2-0, the attention would shift to court one as No. 8 Borges and No. 32 Stodder battled it out. The Vol put up a fight in both sets, but Borges was too much to handle as he powered past his ranked foe, 6-4, 7-5. The straight-set decision moved Borges' overall record to 25-5 on the season, while the sophomore earned his 15th ranked singles win of the year.
Fellow sophomore Strahinja Rakic would snatch away his match from Scott Jones on court three as the Bulldog won, 7-6(5), 6-4 to clinch the match for MSU. The singles win for Rakic improved his overall record to 15-8 on the year and 10-5 in dual-match play this season.
On court four, the Vols would steal away a match from MSU as Srdian Jakovljevic snapped Braun's 10-match win streak in singles play. The defeat would come in a hard-fought, three-set decision, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Up 4-1, the senior pair of Cutura and Hunter would deliver the exclamation point as each Bulldog won their match to close out the 6-1 win. Cutura won, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0(10) over Valero while Hunter picked up his third dual-match win of the season with an impressive 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victory.
"Today was a great confidence builder for our team," Roberts said. "It's a good feeling to finish the weekend the way we did. We're in the home stretch of conference play, so every SEC win is huge and that's no different with today's result over Tennessee."
