STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State junior Victoria Vivians made history Monday afternoon at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, becoming the first three-time winner of the CSpire Gillom Trophy.
After becoming the first freshman to win the award, Vivians became the third repeat winner of the award last season before becoming the first player to win the award three-straight years on Monday.
Her classmate Morgan William was also a finalist along with Southern Miss' Brittany Dinkins
"I am honored to have received this award for the third time," Vivians said. "It was an honor just to be a finalist with two other great players, including my teammate Morgan William who is just as deserving of this award as I am. I would not have received this if it wasn't for my coaches, my family and my great teammates."
The state honor comes just days after she was named a semifinalist for the Naismith Player of the Year Trophy and was tabbed to the national ballot for the Wooden Award.
The Carthage, Miss., has established herself as one of the nation's top players, rating in the Top 10 in the Southeastern Conference averaging 16.4 ppg this season.
Vivians, who reached 1,600-career points this season, earned First Team All-SEC honors for the second-straight year after leading MSU to a school-record second-place league finish with a personal-best and league fifth-most 18.1 ppg.
"I am so proud of Victoria and Morgan, and really of our program to have two of the three finalists for this prestigious honor," Schaefer said. "To win this award three times in a row is unprecedented, and Victoria does it every night against everyone's best. My congratulations to both Victoria and Morgan for such a well-deserved honor."
Behind Vivians, Mississippi State claimed a program-best 29-4 overall record and 13-3 SEC mark. In addition to the second-place league finish, MSU also advanced to the SEC Tournament championship game for the second-straight year and third time overall.
She led the Bulldogs in scoring in 16 games and scored double figures in 29 of the team's 33 games.
Vivians recorded 10 20-point games on the year, with seven coming against SEC competition. She also shined against ranked foes, tallying an 18.4 scoring average in games against Top 25 foes.
Vivians and her Bulldog teammates find out their NCAA Tournament destination and opponents Monday, March 13, at 6 p.m. CT.
