State Dominates UCA To Capture Bulldog Slamboree Title
March 05, 2017 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – It was all Maroon and White on Sunday, as the Mississippi State Bulldogs (18-3) run-ruled Central Arkansas (6-13), 8-0, to capture the 2017 Bulldog Slamboree Championship.
State used a six-run second inning to break things open, highlighted by a three-RBI triple from Kat Moore. The Dogs would then tack on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, capped by a walk-off RBI double to left center from Calyn Adams to send MSU to its 14th-straight victory.
Emily Heimberger opened up MSU's monster second frame, knocking a base hit through the right side to score Katie Anne Bailey. The very next batter, Bevia Robinson kept the scoring going with a single to left to bring home Morgan Bell.
The critical shot came via the bat of Moore, as her triple upped MSU's lead to 5-0. Reggie Harrison would tack on one more with an RBI single to position State firmly in the lead at 6-0. The shot marked the first multi-RBI game of Moore's young career.
Starting pitcher Holly Ward was able to keep UCA at bay over the next three innings, setting MSU up for its second walk off win in as many days.
Taylor Kelly would start the Bulldog fifth with a single to left on the first pitch, bringing up freshman Montana Davidson. In the second at-bat of her career, Davidson drilled a double to put Dogs on second and third. The Bears would make a pitching change and then tallied a pair of outs to put themselves in prime position to keep the game going. However, another Bulldog newcomer had different plans.
Freshman Lexi Malone, taking the first at-bat of her collegiate career, knocked a single through the right side to push Davidson home and put the Dogs up 7-0. The very next batter, Adams sent a 2-1 pitch to left center, upping her hitting streak to seven-straight games and bringing Malone home to seal the 8-0 MSU victory.
Ward (3-1) capped her third win of the year with 5.0 innings of work, striking out three while also walking a trio of batters.
With the win, the Dogs have now claimed the top spot in three of their four non-conference tournaments. MSU finished as the top team in the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge and also secured the February Freezer title last weekend at Nusz.
State will close its seven-game home stand with a Tuesday night game against Troy. The 6:30 p.m. CT contest will be broadcast nationally on the SEC Network, its first national softball broadcast of the 2017 season.
