Bulldogs Open Clemson Invite Strong

CLEMSON, S.C. - After an almost hour delay to start the first round of the Clemson Invitational due to inclement weather, the Mississippi State women's golf team found their rhythm quickly and didn't turn back. Battling through the debris and rainwater left over from a night ago, the Bulldogs sit in seventh place with a 7-over 295, the team's third-lowest first round scorecard of the season.
Eighth-ranked Furman leads the event at 3-under. MSU is just four strokes away from breaking the top four.
MSU was paced once again by senior Jessica Peng, who jumped out to quick start, leading the tournament for a stint. The Taiwan native landed two birdies on her first three holes before she bogeyed No. 4. She went on to finish the first nine strong with birdies on 8 and 9, ending the front 9, 3- under par. Peng fired a 2-under 70 on the day and in a tie for fourth.
"We again were led by senior Jessica Peng," MSU coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. "Today freshman Teri Doss fired 1-under par. I was really pleased with her performance. Athena really battled, she had one bad hole but added 16 pars. We are in a top event in the country and have not been consistent in our performance so for us to be seventh is an accomplishment. We have two days to work hard and move up."
Close behind Peng was freshman Teri Doss who ended the day tied for seventh. In her spring debut, Doss was able to fire her second lowest collegiate round with a 1-under 71. She also tied Peng with four birdies to lead the team.
Athena Yang started slow but was able to recover, and shot a 4-over 76 after shaving four strokes off her front nine holes to play a strong back nine.
Ji Eun Baik and Katie Holt shot 78 and 79 respectively, with Baik landing a birdie on the 9th.
The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday for the second round of the Clemson Invitational at 8 a.m.
