Silkwood Earns 54th Win, Softball Dominates MVSU 8-0

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Senior pitcher Alexis Silkwood earned her 54th career win – just one shy of tying the school record – and MSU softball rolled to its third straight victory by a score of 8-0 over Mississippi Valley State in six innings on Wednesday night at Nusz Park.
"It was definitely good to get everyone some live pitching and field some balls," MSU head coach Vann Stuedeman. "The entire team has a better mindset. We are in a good place mentally and we have worked very hard on having a good approach mentally. The entire team has bought into it and it shows."
The Bulldogs (26-9) jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first two frames. Kat Moore reached on a leadoff single and scored two batters later when Reggie Harrison drove her home with a sharp single to right field to make it 1-0 in the first.
The following frame MSU took advantage of an error and multiple wild pitches by starter Chandler Ellis. Amanda Ivy delivered the big blow with a two-run double, plating Madison Cousineau and Morgan Bell. Harrison collected her second hit of the night, cranking a one-out double into the left field corner to make it 6-0 after two innings.
MSU starter Regan Green worked 2.1 innings, allowing two hits and striking out four. She yielded to Silkwood, who worked a game-high 2.2 innings, allowing no runs and one hit. Silkwood stands just one win away from tying the Bulldog school record for all-time victories currently held by Melissa Massey (55).
"She's really pitching well," Stuedeman said of Silkwood. "She's got a what's best for the rest mentality. I told her just get us outs. It doesn't matter what it looks like. That's what she has been trying to do."
Bevia Robinson's RBI sacrifice fly and Sarai Niu's deep run-scoring single to left accounted for the final margin. Harrison finished 2-for-2 with two RBI, while Ivy scored two runs and drove in two with two hits.
Ellis (2-4) took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits in two innings of work for MVSU, who fell to 8-22 on the year and the 21st straight time to MSU.
The Bulldogs now head to Baton Rouge to face LSU in a three-game set with game times at 6 p.m. Friday, 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. All three games will be televised on SEC Network+.
