Bulldogs Fall In Game One Battle To No. 10 LSU
March 31, 2017 | Softball
BATON ROUGE, La. – In game one of a weekend SEC series in Baton Rouge, the Mississippi State Bulldogs (26-10, 2-5 SEC) rallied late, but fell in a 7-2 battle to the 10th-ranked LSU Tigers (29-7, 5-2 SEC) Friday night.
Reggie Harrison and Caroline Seitz led the way offensively for the Bulldogs, going 2-for-3 and 2-for-2 on the night, respectively. Harrison is now 7-for-9 in her last three games with three runs batted in and a double and has logged a team-high 11 multi-hit games this season. Seitz now has seven multi-hit games this year.
Kat Moore, Calyn Adams and Amanda Ivy each tallied a hit as well, bringing State's total to seven on the night.
Alexis Silkwood tossed 5.0 innings of work, striking out two and walking three. Regan Green threw 1.0 inning of relief work, striking out two and walking two.
The Tigers opened the night with a three-run homer to left in the first inning, but the next four innings would turn into a defensive battle, as State was able to keep the Tigers to a three-run lead, highlighted by a spectacular running grab by Ivy in center to close out the fourth frame.
LSU added insurance runs in the sixth, plating four runs on three hits and two Bulldog errors. MSU answered in the top of the seventh, as Seitz and Adams tallied back-to-back hits the lead off the inning, followed by a fielder's choice that would put runners on the corners. The first Bulldog run came home on a passed ball, making the score 7-1.
State kept the rally going after a two-out single from Ivy and an LSU error brought home MSU's second run. However, LSU would get the next batter to strike out, closing out a 7-2 win.
MSU and LSU return tomorrow at 6 p.m. CT for game two of the weekend series, which is the Tigers' "Strikeout Ovarian Cancer" game. Prior to the contest, the Bulldogs will join the Tigers in participating in the fourth-annual Geaux Teal Ovarian Cancer Walk.
