Bulldogs Ride Wave Of Goals To 3-1 Victory

STARKVILLE, Miss. – To cap the home spring slate, the Mississippi State soccer team powered past visiting Southern Miss on Sunday as the Bulldogs won convincingly, 3-1.
The win improved MSU's spring record to a perfect 3-0, with the Bulldogs outscoring opponents 8-1 in the three spring exhibitions.
"We want to give a lot of credit to Southern Miss and the way they came out and played today," head coach Tom Anagnost said. "They were organized, well-coached and effective on the counter. We definitely started out slow in the first half after making too many mistakes, especially on their goal."
The Golden Eagles held the Bulldogs off the board for the entire first half as USM went ahead 1-0 at the 30 minute mark. The goal was the first allowed by the Bulldogs this spring season.
The game's next goal wouldn't come until the 71st minute mark after MaKayla Waldner put in an excellent cross from Kelly Dorney to even it at 1-1. Soon after, a free kick was headed from McKenzie Adams to Natalee Heiser who buried her chance to give MSU its first lead of the game at the 74th.
With the result a foregone conclusion, a Carly Mauldin cross at the 85th minute would deflect off a USM player for an own goal as the Bulldogs put a stamp on the 3-1 win.
"I give full credit to our team in the second half," Anagnost said. "We played with purpose and urgency to aggressively put away three goals. We are growing well together and our staff is incredibly proud of our character and response in today's win."
Between the posts, Rhylee DeCrane earned her third-consecutive win for the Bulldogs despite giving up her first goal of the spring.

The Bulldogs have only one exhibition remaining this spring as the squad travels to Orange Beach, Ala., on April 22 to face South Alabama at 6 p.m. CT.
