Women's Hoops Honored By GSDP, Hosts Luncheon Tuesday
February 03, 2017 | Women's Basketball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State women's basketball values the support of the Starkville community, and that support was honored Thursday night as the Bulldogs received the Crystal Pineapple Tourism Award at the Greater Starkville Development Partnership's annual banquet.
Vic Schaefer's team was unable to accept the award in person as it was clinching its 10th road win of the season with a 77-47 victory at Auburn. That win improved the fourth-ranked Bulldogs to 22-1 overall, 8-1 in SEC play.
Fans can relive the excitement of that game and others Tuesday as the Bulldogs host their first of two February Hail State Hoops Luncheons. The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. in Mize Pavilion, with doors opening at 11:15.
The $12 cost includes a meal and hoops talk with Schaefer and members of his coaching staff and team. Fans who RSVP for the luncheon by calling (662) 325-0198 or emailing dbrown@athletics.msstate.edu will be entered for the opportunity to win a door prize.
Crowds have been record-breaking for the luncheons, as they have been at Humphrey Coliseum the past three seasons.
MSU received the Crystal Pineapple Tourism Award for its impact in helping drive tourism in Starkville during the 2015-16 season. That campaign, which resulted in a school-record 28 wins and a trip to the NCAA Sweet 16, saw the Bulldogs set the program attendance record for the third-straight year with 92,914.
State averaged over 5,000 fans per game and set the all-time program record with 10,626 for the Jan. 24 contest against South Carolina. The amazing fan support helped MSU claim the fourth-largest average attendance increase in the nation for the second-straight year.
The 2015-16 campaign also saw MSU host the NCAA First and Second Rounds for the first time in program history.
Before Tuesday's luncheon, fans can catch the No. 4 Bulldogs in action at the Hump against Missouri on Sunday. Fans are encouraged to wear white for the contest, which is set for a 1:30 p.m. tip on the SEC Network.
