February 25, 2017 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Looking to carry momentum over from Friday's ranked win, No. 20 Mississippi State men's tennis team (6-3) hosts No. 38 North Carolina State (7-5) on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT as the Bulldogs cap their home-opening weekend.
"We're feeling great heading into tomorrow's match against NC State," head coach Matt Roberts said. "We look at this as another opportunity to improve and get better against a great opponent. NC State is a tough opponent, so we'll need our home crowd for a boost on Sunday."
MSU comes into Sunday's matchup at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre fresh off a 4-1 win against No. 22 Tulane. The victory on Friday marked back-to-back wins for the Bulldogs over ranked opponents. Crucial in the match was the play of Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic, who earned a combined three wins while each defeating a ranked opponent in singles action.
No. 4 Borges downed his 10th ranked foe of the season in the win after defeating No. 37 Constantin Schmitz, 6-4, 6-2. Rakic, cruised out to a quick win over No. 110 Sebastain Rey, 6-2, 6-0, as the sophomore picked up his second ranked win of the season.
Also big to the Bulldogs' success of late has been the stellar play of No. 26 Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey at the No. 1 position in doubles. The duo has won six-straight matches for the Bulldogs and improved their record to 13-4 after a doubles-point-clinching win against the Green Wave.
Sunday's opponent NC State dropped to 7-5 on Saturday after the Wolfpack fell to Tulane at A.J. Pitts, 5-2. NC State had won two out of its last three matches before Saturday's loss to the Green Wave.
Who to Watch For NC State
The Wolfpack has two ranked players in singles play, with No. 58 Nick Horton and No. 72 Alexis Galarneau leading the way. The two have combined for 25 singles wins for NC State 12 dual-match victories.
