Bulldogs Shoot 305 On First Day Of Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate
February 19, 2017 | Women's Golf
NEW ORLEANS, LA. – Rounding out the first day of the annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate, the Mississippi State women's golf team fired a 305 to end the day in 14th place.
No. 11-ranked Miami (Fla.) leads with a 287.
"Today we started out in a hole. We fought hard in the middle, only to drop several coming in at the end," MSU coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. "This is one of the toughest courses and deepest fields we play in all year, so to be within 12 shots of Top ranked Stanford, with our young team, shows we have a lot to build on."
After a career event at the UCF Challenge, Jessica Peng paced the Bulldog squad once again in Sunday's first round by notching a Top 40 finish on the day, shooting 3-over 75. Peng didn't have the start she had planed for, bogeying her first hole. She proved resilient, though, by going on to fire even par on her final nine holes, highlighted with two birdies.
Ji Eun Baik and Katie Holt each shot 77, returning to the clubhouse tied for 59.
Freshman Athena Yang started off slow, finishing her front nine holes 3-over, but she began to heat up after she made the turn, shooing only 1-over for a 76.
Kendall Wisenbaker made her way into the lineup this week after a stellar performance at the UCF Challenge and recorded an 80.
The Bulldogs are back in action for the second round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Monday at 9 a.m. CT.
