February 13, 2017 | Women's Basketball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – A week after moving up to No. 3 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, the Mississippi State women's basketball team also climbed to No. 3 in Monday's Associated Press Top 25 Poll.
Both rankings are the best in program history. State claimed its 51st-straight week in the AP poll, the seventh-longest active streak in the nation. The Bulldogs also snagged their 15th-consecutive week in the Top 10 and 11th in a row in the Top 5.
The Bulldogs moved up one spot after improving to 25-1 overall and 11-1 in the SEC with wins against Vanderbilt and Ole Miss.
Fans can celebrate the record ranking Wednesday at 7 p.m. at The Veranda as Vic Schaefer makes his final DawgTalk appearance of the season.
Schaefer's squad matched the school record for league wins in a season with Sunday's 66-44 road win against the in-state rival Rebels. State claimed its 12th-straight home win with Thursday's 86-41 triumph against Vanderbilt.
MSU held both the Rebels and Commodores to their fewest points of the season. It has also held three-straight opponents to season lows for field goal percentage.
South Carolina follows the Bulldogs at No. 6, while Texas A&M, MSU's opponent on Sunday in College Station, entered the ranking at No. 23. Tennessee and Kentucky both received votes.
Before Sunday's trip to Texas A&M, Mississippi State hosts Georgia Thursday in Humphrey Coliseum. Tip for the contest, which will be streamed online on SEC Network +, is set for 7 p.m.
