STARKVILLE, Miss. – Quinndary Weatherspoon scored 21 points to lead the Mississippi State to a 64-48 win against Little Rock Wednesday night at Humphrey Coliseum.
The Bulldogs (10-1) matched their best defensive outing of the season by holding the Trojans to 48 points. MSU has held five opponents to 60 points or less this season.
Aric Holman was also in double figures with the Bulldogs. Abdul Ado had a team-high 13 rebounds. Ado also had three blocks and a pair of steals. Lamar Peters had four assists.
Weatherspoon also became the 37th player in school history with 1,000 career points.
"I am glad we came out and had a good second half," MSU coach Ben Howland said. "Little Rock had some shots go in at the end of the shot clock. We were a little impatient when they changed defenses on us. In the second half, we did a better job of getting the ball inside.
"Lamar played really well tonight. In the second half, he did a great job defensively. He was helping us share the ball on offense. Abdul continues to play well for us. He does so many things that do not show up on the stat sheet."
The Bulldogs got some separation midway through the first half after a nip-and-tuck start through eight minutes. A 3-pointer by Quinndary Weatherspoon capped a 9-0 run to build a 17-11 lead.
Little Rock battled back for a 20-19 lead with 4:24 left in the half. A pair of free throws by Quinndary Weatherspoon gave the Bulldogs a 24-23 lead.
MSU then led 26-23 at halftime.
In the second half, the Bulldogs pulled away thanks to shooting 51.6 percent from the floor.
A layup by Holman capped a 6-0 run to start the second half, with the Bulldogs on top, 32-23. A 3-pointer by Nick Weatherspoon ran the lead to 40-29 with 14:56 left.
A 10-0 run ran the lead to 50-31 with 11:03 left in the contest.
For the contest, MSU hit 22 of 56 shots from the field (39.3 percent), 5 of 25 shots from 3-point range (20.0 percent) and 15 of 27 shots from the foul line (55.6 percent). Little Rock hit 20 of 54 shots from the field (37.0 percent), 4 of 20 shots from 3-point range (20.0 percent) and 4 of 10 shots from the foul line (40.0 percent).
MSU held a 40-35 rebounding advantage. The Bulldogs had 11 assists and 12 turnovers, while the Trojans had seven assists and 21 turnovers.
Little Rock (3-10) received a team-high nine points from Damir Hadzic.
MSU will take on Southern Mississippi in a 6 p.m. start Saturday at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson. After the Christmas break, MSU will return to the Humphrey Coliseum for a 4 p.m. start on Dec. 30 against North Florida to close the non-conference schedule.
