STARKVILLE, Miss. – A 13-0 run late in the first half provided the separation as Mississippi State beat West Florida 87-62 in an exhibition contest Thursday night at Humphrey Coliseum.
The Bulldogs placed five players in double figures, led by Aric Holman with 16 points. Following suit were Quinndary Weatherspoon with 15 points, Nick Weatherspoon 14, Lamar Peters 11 and Xavian Stapleton with 10.
"In the first 10 minutes we were too stretched out defensively," MSU coach Ben Howland said. "We were much better on defense to finish the half. We were more compact. Nick (Weatherspoon) gave us some great minutes off the bench.
"Lamar (Peters) is back to where he needs to be physically. Eli (Wright) gave us great minutes in both halves. Overall, our guys played hard. We are fouling too much. We will continue to emphasize playing without fouling."
The Division II-member Argonauts built an early 15-8 lead. The early defensive struggles continued as West Florida held a 27-22 lead with 7:53 left in the half.
A 3-point play by Weatherspoon tied the contest 27-27. A layup by Weatherspoon then gave the Bulldogs the lead for good. A basket by Nick Weatherspoon capped the run three minutes later.
MSU shot 47.1 percent in the opening half and led 44-31 at halftime.
The Bulldogs used a 10-4 run early in the second half to run the advantage to 58-39 with 15:15 left. A jumper by Holman capped a 10-0 run as the Maroon and White pushed the lead to 73-44 with 8:46 left.
For the contest, MSU hit 34 of 66 shots from the field (51.5 percent), 6 of 24 shots from 3-point range (25.0 percent) and 13 of 17 shots from the foul line (76.5 percent). West Florida hit 25 of 66 shots from the field (37.9 percent), 3 of 12 shots from the 3-point range (25.0 percent) and 9 of 23 shots from the foul line (39.1 percent).
