Black Takes Win in First Scrimmage at Smith-Wills

JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi State baseball kicked off its weekend in Jackson with a 7-0 Black victory at a rainy Smith-Wills Stadium. The Bulldogs concluded play following the end of the top of the sixth inning.
Junior Jake Mangum led off the game with a leadoff double for Black. He went on to score later in the inning from a bases-loaded walk, and scored again in the second inning after an RBI single, a stolen base and a blown pickoff attempt at second to allow him to touch home.
Black plated two runs against Maroon's sophomore Graham Ashcraft in the first, then rallied again in the second for four more. Two runs came from errors, another on a hit-by-pitch, and one on Mangum's single.
Redshirt freshman Drew Windham replaced Ashcraft for Maroon in the third, and struck out four batters over three innings, not allowing a run. Junior Spencer Price threw the final inning for Maroon, striking out two, but allowing Black's seventh run to score on a wild pitch.
The combination of sophomores Noah Hughes and Jared Liebelt shut down the Maroon bats, allowing just three hits and no runs through five innings. Hughes, a Jackson native, started and lasted three innings and struck out three. Liebelt came in to pitch the final two innings, struck out the first two batters he faced and another in the fifth.
Maroon's best scoring opportunity came with two outs in the bottom of the third. With freshman Jordan Westburg at second, junior Elijah MacNamee dropped a single to right field. Westburg rounded third looking to score, but Black's Josh Hatcher threw a laser from right field to get him at the plate to keep Maroon off the board and end the inning.
State returns to Smith-Wills Stadium tomorrow evening at 6 p.m. for the second scrimmage of the weekend in Jackson. In the afternoon, the Bulldogs will visit Batson Children's hospital before taking the field.
