Bulldogs Advance In Singles, Doubles At ITA Southern Regionals

BATON ROUGE, La. – Saturday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southern Regional Championships was good for the Mississippi State men's tennis team as two Bulldogs advanced to the singles quarterfinals and two Bulldog doubles teams are into the Round of 16.
State's fifth-seeded Giovanni Oradini continued his stellar fall play with an exciting 7-5, 7-5 victory against Auburn's Brandon Laubser to set up an all-MSU battle against teammate Trevor Foshey in the Round of 16. In the battle between the two Bulldogs, Oradini came out on the winning end of a 6-1, 6-2 decision to advance to Sunday's quarterfinals. The sophomore lefty will match up against Tulane's ninth-seeded Luis Erlenbusch with start time set for 9 a.m. CT.
To get to the Round of 16 matchup with his Bulldog teammate, Foshey earned the first ranked victory of his career by downing 125th-ranked Loic Cloes of South Alabama in a three-set thriller, 6-7(5), 7-6(7), 6-4. In the second set tiebreaker, the junior rallied back after being down 6-1 to take the set.
Joining Oradini in the quarterfinals is State's second-seeded and 67th-ranked Strahinja Rakic also got his tournament off to a good start after earning a first-round bye by downing Zvonimir Babic of Ole Miss 6-4, 6-1. He replicated that performance in a 6-4, 6-1 Round of 16 victory against Samford's Jake Faundez after having to move the match indoors due to weather.
Rakic will retake the court in a 9 a.m. match against Charles Sarrio of Auburn. It will be the second meeting between the two, with Rakic posting the match-clinching 6-7(8), 6-3, 7-5 victory on March 5, 2017, to help MSU defeat the Tigers in dual match action.
Junior Niclas Braun kicked things off for the Maroon and White Saturday, breezing to a 6-1, 6-2 victory against South Alabama's Lucas Gonzalez. Braun faced a tough test in the Round of 16, where he dropped a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 decision to Ewan Moore of Tulane, who is ranked 77th nationally and is the tournament's No. 4 seed.
The Bulldogs' lone loss of the second round came when Rafael Wagner of host LSU won a tightly-contested 6-3, 6-4 decision against MSU's Florian Broska. In consolation play, Broska bounced back with a solid 7-6(4), 7-5 triumph against Samford's Eduardo Lourido. The MSU freshman will continue play in the consolation Round of 16 at 9 a.m. on Sunday against Auburn's Olle Thestrup.
In total, MSU netters went a combined 7-3 in Saturday's singles action.
In doubles play, State continued its success, with the seventh-ranked and top-seeded tandem of Braun and Foshey taking a dominating 8-3 win against Andres Gomez and Aljaz Kaplja of Jacksonville State. The duo will face Auburn's Michael Durham and Alex Mascioli at 1 p.m. Sunday in the Round of 16.
State's Broska and Oradini, seeded fourth, also earned a win against a JSU duo Saturday, downing Pablo Caffarena and Joaquin Vallejo 8-5. Like Braun and Foshey, they will also face an Auburn pair in Diego Chavarria and Carlos Sarrio at 1 p.m. Sunday in the Round of 16.
The singles finalists and doubles champion of the ITA Southern Regionals advance to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Indian Wells, Calif., Nov. 1-5.
