Bulldogs Fire Season Low In Second Round Of Magnolia Invite
October 02, 2017 | Women's Golf
WEST POINT, Miss. – Home course advantage seemed to prove true for the Mississippi State women's golf team in the second round of the Magnolia Invitational on Monday. The Bulldogs notched the lowest round of the day with a season-best 1-under 287 to move into fourth place.
MSU shaved nine strokes off Sunday's first round behind four Top-25 performances from the starting lineup. Clara Moyano led the way, firing her best round as a Bulldog with a 3-under-par 69 that vaulted her 19 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for sixth.
"I was patient and let the putts fall," Moyano said. "I think we played well as a team today. I didn't let the double on No. 12 get in my head. I just forgot about it and kept trying to play well."
The Madraid, Spain, native started her career day by carding three early birdies, including two-straight to open the round, en route to finishing the front nine at 2-under. She closed her first nine holes with a birdie and added another on the par-5 10th. A double on No. 12 didn't set her back, as she answered with birdies on No. 15 and No. 16 before capping her 69 with clutch pars on the 17th and 18th holes.
Junior Katie Holt, Sunday's clubhouse leader for the Bulldogs, performed well again in the second-round, firing an even-par 72 that tied her for 13th. Holt closed the front nine at 1-over-par, then notched seven-straight pars before draining a birdie on the par-3 17th to end the back nine 1-under.
Fellow junior Kendall Wisenbaker also finished the day at even par, moving her into 15th position. The Texas native had a strong back nine, draining three birdies including one on the challenging 14th.
Freshman Aubree Jones and Athena Yang rounded out the lineup with a pair of 74s. Jones moved into a tie for 20th, while Yang jumped into a tie for 26th.
Leading the host of individuals competing for the Bulldogs was rookie Blair Stockett. The Jackson, Miss., native started the round with a bang, draining a birdie on No. 10. She really heated up after the turn, putting in three birdies to finish her final nine holes at 2-under to move into a tie for 20th with a 1-over 73.
Ela Grimwood and Blaise Carabello added a 77 and 76, respectfully, while Teri Doss notched an 80.
The final round of the Magnolia Invitational is slated for a shot gun start at 8 A.M. at Old Waverly Golf Club.
