Borges Set To Begin USTA Futures In Harlingen, Texas, Wednesday

HARLINGEN, Texas – Looking to test himself against some of the top young tennis stars from around the globe, Mississippi State's Nuno Borges is set to begin play at the USTA Futures tournament in Harlingen, Texas.
The Bulldog All-American enters as the tournament's No. 6 overall seed and will begin play on Wednesday. Borges will open up the tournament against Ricardo Rodriguez of Venezuela (ATP 811), who reached the main draw through the qualifying draw. Rodriguez also has experience as part of Venezuela's Davis Cup team.
"We like to give our players opportunities to play in Futures tournaments during the season since most of them want to pursue pro careers," MSU head coach Matt Roberts said. "This tournament is a great opportunity for Nuno to continue his success in Futures tournaments. He will be pushed against high-level competition, which will be great for his development."
Borges, the reigning Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, is looking to put more wins under his belt after dropping a hard-fought second-round match in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., on Oct. 6 to open the 2017 fall slate. The Maia, Porto, Portugal product was a 2017 NCAA Singles semifinalist.

On Thursday, the rest of the Bulldogs will begin play at the ITA Southern Regional Championships in Baton Rouge, La. MSU rookie Hunter Harrison will kick things off for the Bulldogs in the qualifying draw on Thursday, while Giovanni Oradini, Trevor Foshey, Niclas Braun, Strahinja Rakic and Florian Broska all will take the court in the main draw.
Last year at the ITA Southern Regionals in Auburn, Ala., Borges punched his ticket to the National Indoor Championships in Flushing, N.Y., by claiming the singles title. State's doubles tandem of Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey—ranked seventh nationally this season—nearly gave the Bulldogs the singles and doubles sweep, reaching the tournament finals.
