State Opens Team Practices Ahead of Fall Slate
October 10, 2017 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Returning from fall break, Mississippi State softball began team practice with a challenging three-hour workout inside Nusz Park.
Under direction of head coach Vann Stuedeman, the Bulldogs began practice with individual outfield and infield drills before transitioning into relays and base running.
"It's fun to come back and see the returners pick up where they left off," Stuedeman said. "That's always a big plus. The key will be helping our newcomers and younger players to grow up fast, which is one of the challenges of the fall. We move at a faster pace, the balls are hit harder and the arms are stronger, so our newcomers need to think clearly deeper into practice. We're hopeful to get those things corrected as we move forward in the fall."
State closed the opening workout with hitting drills, focusing on bunting and slap hitting.
Ten newcomers, including nine true freshmen, took the field for Mississippi State. The roster also features 16 returners for the 2017 squad that advanced to the Salt Lake City Regional after posting a 36-22 record.
MSU begins its fall slate on Friday, Oct. 20 with a doubleheader against East Mississippi Community College inside Nusz Park. First pitch is slated for 5:30 p.m. CT.
