Bulldogs End First Round Of Magnolia Invitational

WEST POINT, Miss. – Playing in picture-perfect weather, the Mississippi State women's golf team fired a 296 to end the opening day of the Magnolia Invitational tied for fifth place.
Junior Katie Holt paced the Bulldogs on Sunday at Old Waverly Golf Club, shooting a 1-over 73 to end the day tied for 16th.
The Clermont, Fla., native ended the front nine holes even par after a draining a birdie on the par-5 ninth. Holt made the turn and opened her back nine with five-straight pars before adding a birdie on the 17th.
"Old Waverly is such a fun course to play and I'm glad that we get to host our tournament here," Holt said. "The course is playing great. Today was one of those days we had to stay patient with ourselves and the course. We are playing solid golf as a team right now and just have to stay patient, put in the work and the putts will fall."
Kendall Wisenbaker carded two birdies on the front nine, and she really heated up on the back nine, making par on her first five holes before getting a birdie to fall on No. 15. She ended the back nine even par and wrapped the day in a tie for 21st with a 74.
Freshman Aubree Jones joined Wisenbaker in 21nd place. She played even-par golf the majority of the day, with her lone hiccup coming with a double bogey on No. 12. The freshman showed her resiliency, however, carding six more pars to end her day with a 74.
Clara Moyano and Athena Yang each closed the first round with a 75. The two finished tied for 25th overall, helping the starting five all finish in the Top 25 collectively.
MSU also had four players — Teri Doss, Blaise Carabello, Ela Grimwood and Blair Stockett — compete as individuals.
Doss had a career day, tying her second-lowest scorecard with a 71. The sophomore finished the front nine 1-over, but she bounced back on the back nine, recording birdies on Nos. 11 and 16 to head to the clubhouse in a tie for ninth place.
Freshman Blair Stockett turned in a stellar MSU debut, ending first-round play in a tie for 25th with a 3-over 75. The rookie rallied from a double bogey on her opening hole to notch birdies on the ninth and the 11th.
Blaise Carabello wrapped the day tied for 35th with a 4-over 76, while sophomore Ela Grimwood tied for 47th with a 79.
The Bulldogs will continue play for the second round of the Magnolia Invitational on Monday beginning at 8:30 at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss. State's five-player lineup tees off of No. 1, while the quartet of individuals begin their rounds on the 10th.
