No. 24 MSU Women’s Tennis Cruises To 4-0 Season-Opening Win Over UAB
January 22, 2017 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – In its first outing of the 2017 season, the 24th-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team (1-0) ousted UAB (1-3) 4-0 in McCarthy Gymnasium Sunday afternoon.
The victory for the Bulldogs extended their win streak versus the Blazers to 14 and their all-time record against UAB to 24-3.
The Bulldogs began Sunday's match with dominant performances at the one and two doubles positions. State's tandem of freshman Sara Lizariturry and sophomore Anastasia Rentouli made quick work of UAB's Reghan Lynch and Hana Sisirak, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot. To clinch the doubles point, MSU's fifth-ranked duo of senior Jasmine Lee and freshman Lisa Marie Rioux belted the Blazers' Marlene Herrmann and Pardis Kianoush, also 6-1, on court one.
MSU carried its momentum into singles play, sweeping the Blazers in three-straight matches to clinch the triumph.
In her career dual-match debut, the State rookie Rioux retired UAB's Herrmann in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2, extending the home team's lead to 2-0. MSU's 27th-ranked Lee then held off the Blazers' Kianoush, 6-1, 6-4 on court 1 to give the Bulldogs a commanding 3-0 lead.
To clinch the match, the Bulldogs' Rentouli posted a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory against UAB's Lynch at No. 3. In her first dual match as a Bulldog, State's Lizariturry held a 6-4, 1-0 lead against the Blazers' Sisirak when play was suspended.
Junior Jennifer Brown and sophomore Caroline Kelly were slated to play at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions in singles, but the match was clinched before they could take the court at McCarthy Gymnasium.
"Today was really good for us to get experience for our young players," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "We started off the day in doubles playing really well and it carried over into singles play. I thought both Lisa and Sara performed well. Playing indoors today will obviously help us for next weekend and after today's performance we will be better prepared to play indoors at Michigan."
MSU now heads to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the 2017 ITA Kickoff Weekend. The 24th-ranked Bulldogs face Syracuse on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 1 p.m. CT, before taking on the winner of Denver and host Michigan the following day.
